Read the whole tyre specification

Request clear photographs of the tyre sidewalls and the vehicle’s applicable tyre information. Record size, load and speed ratings, brand and model, together with any relevant approval requirements. A seller describing “large alloy wheels” has not yet provided the information needed to order replacements.

Check whether the present wheels match the documented configuration. A tyre that physically fits a rim is not automatically an approved choice for the vehicle. The specification record should identify factory equipment and subsequent changes so a tyre specialist can assess the proposed combination.

Inspect all four positions

Ask for individual observations rather than one photograph of the best-looking tyre. Record visible damage, tread measurements across appropriate areas, sidewall condition and date markings where legible. Include any spare or mobility equipment that is claimed as part of the sale.

Uneven wear needs an explanation and, where appropriate, a workshop assessment of alignment, suspension or other causes. Replacing the tyres without investigating the reason may leave the buyer with another bill. Do not describe the vehicle as ready simply because one recent tyre makes the whole set appear newer.

Distinguish new stock from fresh tyres

A new-car offer can still have spent time standing, while a used car may have recently received a suitable replacement set. Read the actual tyre condition alongside production and storage information. The vehicle’s registration description does not answer every question about its delivery preparation.

Ask the assessor to report any vibration or visible concern through the inspection process. Do not diagnose storage damage from a date code alone. The decision should be based on appropriate assessment of the tyres and the intended operating requirements, with uncertain findings retained for follow-up.

Compare a fully fitted quotation

Separate tyre supply, fitting, balancing and any additional work the workshop identifies. Ask whether valves, monitoring-system work, alignment assessment or disposal charges are included where relevant. Keep the quantity explicit: an attractive price for one tyre is not a four-tyre preparation budget.

For an illustrative calculation, four tyres at 90 currency units each plus 60 for agreed fitting services gives 420. This is arithmetic only, not an X5 PLUS market quote. Replace the inputs with dated local supplier terms, and keep unrelated suspension repairs outside that tyre total.

Avoid an unsupported wheel upgrade

A larger wheel can change purchase cost, replacement availability and the customer’s ride expectations. Before accepting a changed wheel package, ask for the exact wheel and tyre specifications and competent confirmation that the combination is suitable. Do not infer compatibility from a modified car shown online.

Consider local stock too. An approved size that is difficult to obtain in the receiving market may be inconvenient for a dealer’s customer. The parts-support discussion should establish who can supply the correct replacement, rather than relying on the claim that any tyre shop will have it.

Use the tyre findings in the offer comparison

Suppose one candidate needs a complete set and another has a documented, suitable recent set. Compare both cars after bringing them to the same acceptance standard. A lower asking price may still be attractive, but only after the necessary work and availability are understood.

If a seller offers to replace tyres before release, record the agreed specification and require evidence of the completed work. “New tyres included” leaves too much open if the supplier can choose any brand, rating or configuration. Keep a substitute subject to review when it changes the accepted requirement.

When two suppliers quote different tyre products, compare their exact specifications and included work before choosing the lower total. A quotation should also state its current availability and validity. If a preferred tyre is unavailable, have the proposed replacement assessed on its own merits instead of allowing an unnamed equivalent to be fitted after the commercial comparison has already been approved.

What belongs in the handover file?

Retain the final tyre photographs, workshop invoice and any relevant recommendations or limitations. If monitoring equipment was serviced, include the work record without assuming that it resolves unrelated warning messages. The receiving dealer should be able to compare the delivered set with the approved one.

In the initial enquiry, state the destination, intended use and whether original wheel configuration is mandatory. For batches, inspect and cost each car separately. Shared purchasing can simplify sourcing, but the condition of one X5 PLUS tyre set cannot establish the preparation needs of the others.
