Request the complete delivery term with the actual offer
Ask for the named port and applicable Incoterms edition beside vehicle identity, date, currency and validity. ICC is the primary source for its rules. FOB and CIF concern sea and inland-waterway transport, not arbitrary door-to-door labels. The export guide supplies the actual route context. Have responsible providers explain the proposed handover and applicable obligations. The buyer should know whether the same selected X5 PLUS and preparation scope are being discussed in both offers before the abbreviation becomes a price comparison. Retain unanswered scope visibly instead of interpreting a familiar term as proof every necessary service is already included.
Review whether the term fits the handover
Discuss the actual custody and movement with qualified providers, especially where a containerised shipment has an earlier handover to a carrier. ICC Academy explains why FCA can be relevant rather than simply choosing FOB because the car will travel by sea. Do not prescribe one term for every X5 PLUS route. Ask which party performs each agreed service and where the actual responsibility changes. The party authority review remains separate. A supplier’s ability to quote a term does not establish disposal authority or every provider’s capability. Keep the transport proposition clear enough that the buyer can understand what the quoted arrangement actually asks each party to do.
Separate paying carriage from bearing risk
Under the applicable rule, confirm cost allocation and risk transfer independently with the relevant provider. CIF involves arranging carriage and the rule’s insurance obligation to the named destination, while risk transfer is a separate question from the freight-paid endpoint. Do not assume every event until arrival remains the seller’s risk or that a familiar abbreviation proves universal all-risk protection. The actual insurance proposal needs its own scope and terms reviewed. Preserve the distinction in the purchasing record. A current quote may describe costs without resolving the accepted vehicle condition or formal remedies, which remain part of the actual agreement with appropriate advice.
List preparation and origin inclusions explicitly
Request the selected vehicle, relevant inspection, agreed work, inland movement and actual origin service scope in the quotation. The equipment and work schedule connects those items to an identifiable candidate. Read the relevant obligations and provider proposal rather than infer every charge from the three-letter term alone. An original Oshan-labelled car awaiting work and a prepared later configuration are not equivalent vehicle offers merely because both use the same delivery wording. Keep parts, keys and important functions clear. Unknown essential preparation should remain unresolved instead of being hidden inside a nominal freight saving or a guessed minor reserve.
Obtain actual insurance and receiving estimates
Ask appropriate providers about the issued cover, insured interest, movement, value basis, relevant exclusions and notice process. Carrier liability is not automatically interchangeable with the requested cargo insurance. Request destination-related estimates separately from responsible receiving providers, with currency, validity and dependencies explicit. The route comparison keeps those costs with the purchase. Do not invent a universal tax rate or presume CIF removes every receiving charge. Eligibility and current procedures need vehicle-specific local review. Where an essential input remains unknown, preserve the gap; a convenient fixed allowance cannot establish coverage or create a guaranteed final usable landed amount for every destination.
Compare equivalent services without counting them twice
Align quote dates, currencies and delivery scope, using an explicitly supported dated conversion where relevant. The quote worksheet adds only the services missing from each actual offer. Freight already included should not be added again, while requested extra cover needs its own confirmed amount and scope. A different named port can change onward movement, so obtain relevant estimates before treating the endpoints as equal. Keep conditional and unresolved costs separate from quoted amounts. A comparison can show stronger-supported responsibility even where the final total remains incomplete. Explain that remaining uncertainty instead of declaring the lower nominal number the winner before essential scope is known.
Preserve the rest of the purchase agreement
Agree actual identity, condition acceptance, payment, documents, changes and applicable remedies with suitable advice. Incoterms do not automatically settle every contractual matter. Use the release review alongside the selected transport arrangement. If vehicle, carrier, port or route changes, revisit affected quotations and responsibilities. Choose a supported term and provider combination fitting the real movement. Avoid universal cheaper, safer, refund or all-risk claims for either abbreviation. The receiving dealer should be able to explain what was included and which conditions remained, without treating a transport term as a certificate of vehicle condition or a guarantee for the whole transaction.
